Sou
Sou, the Portuguese word for “I am”, is a special project born from the friendship of two renown winemakers, Nuno Mira do Ó and Joana Santiago. The duo seeks dual visions: the true expression of a varietal they feel is one of the best in the World, Alvarinho, and to showcase forgotten red varietals native to the region. The very northern tip of Portugal in the Vinho Verde region is home to Monção and Melgaço, widely considered the ultimate terroir for unlocking the true potential of what Alvarinho can be. In times past, the region was home to an incredible array of native red grapes as well. Joana and Nuno are passionate about resurrecting and highlighting this history. All fruit for the Sou wines comes from Quinta de Santiago.
Through sustainable viticulture and a minimalist approach in the winery, Nuno and Joana bring a raw, pure expression of Alvarinho and native red varietals to fruition. To know Joana and Nuno individually and spend time with them is a pleasure. To experience their care and daily focus on their work is impressive. To see them in combined action working together as a team is awesome. The Sou wines are special for many reasons, not the least of which is the two people who bring them to life.
