Pedro Frey is the descendant of several generations of grape growers in the Douro Valley and his family traditionally sold their grapes to the big port producers. Pedro grew up in Porto and would spend his summers at the family farm in the countryside. He has duel degrees in viticulture and enology and honed his craft with winemaking experience and technical visits on five continents including wineries in France, Italy, Australia, Argentina, and California.
Pedro moved full-time to his family’s farm in Lamego in 2012 to start his business and his first vintage was 2013. He personally works 3.5 hectares of vines and hand built his winery in a century-old farmhouse.
With a focus on indigenous varietals, the vineyard is composed of vines more than 100 years old. High altitude and soils rich in granite and schist provide great natural acidity and enable the production of fresh, mineral wines.
With organic viticulture and minimal intervention in the winery, making Frey wine is very natural. Pedro uses only wild yeast, avoids acid or fining additives, and mainly uses gravity and buckets in a handcrafted process.
